I CAN'T DO WHAT I'VE BEEN CALLED TO DO!

- copied

There are many reasons why God shouldn’t have called you to your position.  But don’t worry; you’re in good company.

Moses stuttered
David’s armor didn’t fit
John Mark was rejected by Paul
Timothy had ulcers
Hosea’s wife was a prostitute
Jacob was a liar
David had an affair
Naomi was a widow
Solomon was too rich
Jesus was too poor
Abraham was too old
David was too young
Peter was afraid to die
Lazarus was dead
John was self-righteous
Miriam was a gossip
Paul was a murderer
So was Moses
Jonah ran away from God
Elijah was burned out
Gideon doubted
Thomas did too
Martha was a worrywart
Mary was lazy
Samson had long hair
Noah got drunk

Did I mention that Moses had a short fuse?
So did Peter, Paul – well, lots of folks did.

Satan says, “You’re not worthy”
Jesus says, “So what, I AM.”

Satan points us to our past mistakes
God points us to the cross.

Sure, there are lots of reasons why God shouldn’t have called us.  But if we are truly in love with Him; if we hunger for Him more than our next breath – He’ll use us in spite of who we are, where we’ve been, or what we look like.

Step out of your limitations into the illimitable nature of who God is.  Then your passion for God and your passion to communicate who He is and His plans for us will make mincemeat of your limitations.

  • Ongoing curriculum for adults, students, and kids, aligned so all age groups are experiencing the same study
  • Small group Bible studies for students and adults available in print or digitally
  • App appropriate for family devotional times
  • Bibles such as The Big Picture Interactive Bible for Kids and the Essential Teen Study Bible

If you ARE using The Gospel Project:

This September we will begin a new three year study plan that is fully aligned across every age group level.  If you have enjoyed the journey this time, stay on it and discover even more insights. Fifty-two sessions will have focal passages that are new to The Gospel Project.  The remaining sessions (104 of them) will be rewritten by new authors, providing a fresh perspective and insight.

The essence of The Gospel Project remains the same – sharing the story God has been telling throughout all history and found in every book of the Bible.

What will be new for Adults:
  • The Personal Study Guide will be re-imagined as a daily discipleship guide, offering an indispensible aid to spiritual growth.
  • The Leader Guide will be redesigned to assist leaders as the facilitate and lead each session, including a new easy-to-follow teaching template, summaries of the daily readings, and action points to encourage the group throughout the week
What will be new for Students:
  • The Personal Study Guide will become an essential tool for daily, deeper dives into the weeks study.
  • Apologetics material to equip students to answer challenges to the Christian faith will be added.
  • The Leader Guide will feature a new, easy-to-follow teaching template to assist leaders as they show student how all Scripture points to Jesus.
  • A new Middle School Edition will be available digitally.

What will be new for Kids:
  • Deeper engagement questions and emphasis on Bible skills for younger and older kids will be available.
  • All new story videos, incorporating a new style, will engage children and will connect to the study material.
  • A brand new poster will be created to outline the genealogy of Jesus for kids and will connect them to the Bible’s big story.
  • The giant timeline, small group timelines, and map sets will be updated to reflect the new study plan.

LifeWay Leadership: Making Disciples in the Pews—and in the Pulpit

In the last three months, LifeWay has hosted a Pipeline conference, launched a new version of Ministry Grid, and watched its 5 Leadership Questions podcast surpass a million downloads. Each of these brands is a resource provided by LifeWay Leadership.

Even though LifeWay Leadership has a significant following (it’s approaching 32,000 Twitter followers), some might not be familiar with all that makes up this department.

LifeWay Leadership is a department in the Resources Division that serves church leaders - pastors, church staff, and ministry volunteers. Five years ago, LifeWay Leadership was launched to provide training, resources, and coaching for leadership development.

So what does LifeWay Leadership consist of? The department encompasses four brands:

1.      5 Leadership Questions podcast

This podcast is hosted by Daniel Im, LifeWay’s director of church multiplication for NewChurches.com along, with Todd Adkins, director of LifeWay Leadership, and Eric Geiger, senior vice president of LifeWay. The 5LQ podcast has had more than 1 million downloads since it started two years ago.

Podcasts feature conversations with top leaders in their spheres, like Fresh Life Church pastor Levi Lusko, She Reads Truth writer/editor Amanda Bible Williams, Life.Church founding pastor Craig Groeschel, and songwriter/worship leader Keith Getty.

What sets 5LQ apart from other brands in the LifeWay Leadership suite is that it’s geared toward leaders outside the church—whether in the context of a nonprofit or in the business world. “This particular podcast is loved and accepted by a broader community,” Im says.

2.      Pipeline conference

In 2016, the inaugural Pipeline conference commenced in Nashville, Tennessee. Pipeline began as a way to gather pastors, other church leaders, and volunteers to hear from leadership experts.
A church staff can also add coaching days, which allow ministry teams to have intensive leadership development sessions.

Pipeline conferences in 2018
Pipeline West: Developing Your Leadership Pipeline
Orange County, California, Feb. 22-23

Pipeline 2018: Recruit. Develop. Repeat.
Nashville, Tennessee, Oct. 10-12

3.      NewChurches.com

NewChurches.com is an online hub that provides training and resources on church multiplication for church plants and multisite churches. Online courses, such as Essential Church Planting, Campus Pastoring, and Bivocational Ministry, are available for people to purchase a la carte. The website also offers exclusive coaching and content for subscribers, called Plus Members.

“The really exciting thing is, we offer more free stuff than paid stuff,” says Daniel Im. “While templates, webinars, and other Plus Membership features are accessible only through our paid membership community, only 1 of 5 resources we produce each week is paid; the rest are free.”

One of those free resources is the New Churches Q&A podcast, which has reached more than a half a million downloads.

4.      Ministry Grid

Im is also the product manager for Ministry Grid, a leadership learning management system that runs with the tagline, “training made simple.”

Ministry Grid includes more than 3,000 training videos and provides a tool for pastors and church staff to easily train volunteers and leaders from anywhere at any time.

“Some of our training videos feature experts doing 5- to 10-minute sessions on this topic,” Im says. “It’s a high-tech, high-touch approach to training.”

What To Know About the Christmas Carol, O Holy Night

The Christmas Carol, “O Holy Night” has a rich and powerful history.  The lyrics were penned in 1847 by Frenchman poet, Placide Cappeau, in response to a request by a priest for a Christmas service.  Feeling inadequate to the task, he read the Gospel of Luke for inspiration. He envisioned what it might have been like to have been in Bethlehem to witness the birth of Jesus.  From there, he penned the now famous words to “Cantique de Noel”, or O Holy Night.

Cappeau determined that “Cantique de Noel” would be even more powerful if set to music.  For help, he turned to well known composer Adolphe Charles Adams.  At first, Adams was reluctant to participate.  As a Jew, the celebration of the Christian savior did not appeal to him.  Still, something about the words of the poem inspired him, and thus he endeavored to compose an original score unlike anything that had been heard before.  It only took Adams three weeks to complete the work, and it was immediately performed at a Christmas Eve mass.

The carol was embraced quickly and was a popular song that was sung by church choirs in Europe at Christmastime…until a scandal hit.  Word had spread that Cappeau had left the church and that Adams was an unbeliever so, as a result, the beautiful song was banned from being sung in churches.  However, the song had found a place in the hearts of the people and it continued to be sung in homes and on the streets.

One interesting wartime story is often shared about this song. A French soldier fighting in the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 on Christmas Eve, stepped out of his trench and sang the three verses of “Cantique de Noel” while his fellow soldiers stared in amazement.  Upon completion of the song, a German soldier boldly emerged from hiding, approached the Frenchman and began to sing the Martin Luther written carol, “From Heaven above to Earth I come.”  It is said that for the next 24 hours, in honor of Christmas day, both sides ceased fighting.

While the song was banished by the Church in France, “Cantique de Noel” found its way to the ears of an obscure American minister, named John Sullivan Dwight.  He was instantly drawn to its inspiring words and beautiful musical score. As an ardent abolitionist, he was particularly drawn to the third verse.  He translated the song into English and its current set of lyrics.

Here is one more interesting piece of trivia about this beautiful carol.  It is the first song to be heard live over the radio!  In 1906, Canadian Reginald Fessenden (a former assistant to Thomas Edison), read the Luke 2 passage and finished with singing this carol.

Take a fresh look at this song and think of whom you can share these words who may be:

·         struggling with an addiction or habitual sin – He has appeared and given our lives worth
·         worn down with a weary soul – He breaks into our day with hope
·         going through lonely trials – He was born to be our constant friend
·         shackled with a sense of inferiority – He has brought freedom and brotherhood

O Holy Night!
The stars are brightly shining; It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining; Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices; For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Fall on your knees; Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine; Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine; Oh night divine

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming; With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming; Here come the wise men from Orient land
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger; In all our trials born to be our friend

Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother; And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we; Let all within us praise His holy name

Merry Christmas from the Edfeldt household to yours and to ALL mankind!
