Showing Kindness at the Office

Here's a good resolution to set and one that should be easy to carry out. Here are some practical ways to show kindness to others at the office:

Note special occasions. If your office posts a monthly list of employee birthdays, send a short email - just a simple note wishing them a great day.

Ask how someone is doing –and wait for a response. The next time you ask someone, “How are you doing?” stop them and really listen to their answer. Hint: You may have to follow up by asking, “How are you really doing?” or "On a scale of 1 to 10, where would you rate that?"

Pick up the slack. Help someone. Offer to make their copies when you're through with the machine. Stay late to help someone meet a deadline.

Reprimand kindly. If you must reprimand someone, follow Christ's command to treat others as you could like to be treated. Do it privately and kindly. If appropriate, offer to help the person in his area of struggle. If you receive a reprimand, control your temper. Take a walk, cool off, and request to speak with your supervisor privately if follow-up is needed. If you have a true difference of opinion, express it professionally while showing respect for your supervisor’s authority.

Be generous. Buy a $3.50 box of Girl Scouts cookies from a coworker's child, pay with a $5 bill, and tell her to keep the change. Practice going the extra mile.

Recognize Someone. Every week, pick out one person – it could be the janitor or the boss – and thank him or her for doing their job well.

Provide Laughter. Laughter is good medicine. Post a cartoon in the break room. Leave a mystery gag gift in someone’s chair. Lift someone’s spirits. But always be sensitive and appropriate in your subject.

Write it down. Keep a supply of note cards in your desk drawer. When someone is on your mind, take it as the Holy Spirit’s prompting to drop a line to them saying that you’re thinking/praying for them.

Remember the quote from Mark Twain: "Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see."

It's obvious that there is really no comparison. We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about. Remember to keep Christ in Christmas and that He is the reason for the season.

Yes, Virginia, there may be a Santa Claus, but JESUS IS BETTER, even better than Santa Claus.

It's a part of our culture to nickname our favorite athletes. We like to give them special names that refer to their unique abilities or their extraordinary achievements, names that describe their stature or their personality.

Believe it or not, men and women in Bible times were named the same way! Esau means "red" or "hairy." Moses means "to draw out" (Pharaoh's daughter drew him out of the bulrushes). Often when someone had a special encounter with God, He gave that person a new name to reflect the change in his or her character or purpose. Abram, "exalted father," became Abraham, "father of many nations." His wife Sarai became Sarah, "princess." Jacob, "the deceiver," became Israel, "prince of God." Simon became Peter, "the rock."

The Bible also gives us many names that describe the attributes (characteristics) of God. Here are just a few: the Almighty, the Creator, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Righteous Judge, the Holy One. The Bible also tells us that one day God will give each of us a special name — a secret name — that no one else knows. It's just between him and us (Revelation 2:17). At that time, he will also write his own name upon us.

But God has given the most precious name to his Son, Jesus Christ, "that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11). That's the Name above all names!

Finally, there is a special name that Jesus calls each of us – “friend”. Think of it, we have such a mutual, loving, intimate relationship that Jesus calls us “friend”. That ought to make you feel good all over.

The Bible and Golf

Have you ever watched professional golfers and been awed by their ability to land a shot from two hundred yards away just a few yards from the hole? You wonder how they can judge the distance to the hole with such precision. Do they have an internal GPS system that enables them to guess the distances on the course with uncanny accuracy?

Not really. What they have is a yardage book. A yardage book is a map of each hole on the course that gives distances from various landmarks on the hole to the green. Decades ago Arnold Palmer and his caddy began drawing rough yardage charts with little pictures of trees, fairways, greens, sand traps and such of the various holes on all the courses they played. Jack Nicklaus was the pro who really made yardage books popular. Today along with the maps many pro golfers will keep what essentially is a personal journal of how they have played each hole of the course, what clubs they have used from various distances, what the wind was doing, and so on, and what happened to their shots.

Wouldn't it be nice to have yardage books for the tough decisions we make in life? Should I date this person or not? Should I go to this or that school? Should we buy this house? In our technological age, we want specifics. We want everything mapped out. We want to remove all the uncertainties from life. We want to be able to use our past experiences to predict exactly what will happen in the future. But God hasn't chosen to work with us in that way. He has given us an essential book of guidance that we can't do without, but we still have to use judgment in how to apply what it teaches. Most important, we need to be walking with God in prayer and trust. (by Craig Brian Larson)

Five Commitments of a Bible Study Leader

Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 helped me pinpoint five commitments I want to keep as I teach the Word:

When I came to you, brothers, announcing the testimony of God to you, I did not come with brilliance of speech or wisdom. For I didn't think it was a good idea to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom but with a powerful demonstration by the Spirit, so that your faith might not be based on men's wisdom but on God's power. (HCSB)

1. I will teach, not impress (v. 1).

I need to check my motives and my teaching style. Are my students new Christians? I must drop the religious lingo. My teaching methods also need to match the preferred learning style of the generation and gender I am teaching. For instance older adults may respond to a lecture format, while younger adults generally prefer lively discussion.

2. I will teach only Jesus (v. 2).

I must refrain from elevating my opinions above Scripture. As I share my experiences and tell what has worked for me, I need to ensure that what I am touting as truth is indeed from the author of truth.

3. I will be vulnerable so that in my weakness His strength is felt (v. 3).

Students are hungry for teachers who can relate to their needs for forgiveness, direction, and hope. While I do not need to share inappropriate details, I do need to let my classes know that I have sinned and I do struggle. Such transparency creates a safe environment and draws students to the only one who is perfect: God.

4. I will invoke the Holy Spirit’s presence and power (v. 4).

I can let a busy schedule or pure neglect keep me from praying about my lesson or for my class. Big mistake! After all, it is not my message that will reach hearts or change lives, but “a demonstration of the Spirit’s power.”

There are times I don’t feel as if the Holy Spirit shows up as I prepare or teach. But if I have sought Him through prayer, I can proceed with the assurance that He is working in my students.

5. I will build God’s kingdom, not mine (v. 5).

When I’ve spent hours studying, praying for, and standing in front of my students, it’s tempting to expect honor, a measure of dependence, and even allegiance from them. However, I want them to be dependent upon their relationship with God, not their relationship with me. I encourage my students to compare what I say with God’s word, and I’ve committed to admit when I am wrong.

We are less than two months away from the world-wide premiere of Sherwood Pictures latest project, "Courageous". By now, I assume you have heard or seen something about the movie. You may have taken advantage of an opportunity to see a special screening of it. I hope you have sensed the impact this movie holds on our fathers, our churches, and our communities.

Here are some answers to anticipated (and already asked) questions:

Q1. Where is a list of places where the movie is scheduled to be shown that opening weekend?

9 Ideas for Reaching the Unchurched

Human nature is fascinating to observe. Behavior in anonymous places sometimes indicates whether people have a relationship with Jesus, but many people could be described simply as secular.

Secular people need Jesus. They have secular values and mindsets. Anyone who lives by secular values is not following the Holy Spirit’s leadership.

Here are some tips that might help you break through into the lives of secular people.

1. Communicate the basics. Most secular people have no idea what some of our biblical “lingo” means. Ask people whether they understand what you are saying when using biblical terms and concepts.

2. Deal with eternity. Secular people generally live for today. Communicate that everyone will spend eternity somewhere; the only question is where. Help lost people understand that the Christian life also brings excitement and happiness for today as well as a promise for tomorrow.

3. Talk about guilt. People today think more about what feels right to them and base their lifestyles on what seems good for the moment. They reject absolutes. Help them discover that actions have consequences and that our actions—sin—have absolute consequences—hell.

4. Get excited about your church. Talk about the positive things happening in your church. Address how your church helps families grow closer and helps children develop positive images of life and faith.

5. Connect with secular people. Some people just want a friend with whom they can talk freely. Others isolate themselves because they don’t trust strangers. Creating friendships may lead to connecting with the church and Christ.

6. Build trust. Suspicion and uncertainty plague some people because Christians they have known or stories about Christians have left them overly cautious. Let them know that your faith has brought you through difficult times. Keep your word when you make commitments.

7. Help them grow. Help people develop a more positive self-esteem and discover that they are people of worth. Encourage them and help them discover that Jesus Christ gave His life for them.

8. Explain the nature of humanity. God created each of us as people with a free will. People are free to act as they choose. That doesn’t mean God isn’t concerned about or in control of humanity. God has not abandoned humanity.

9. Open the door. Unchurched people often avoid the church because they just aren’t sure how to find their way in. Don’t be confused: It’s not the building; they can’t figure out how to break into the church family. Some classes and congregations act as if newcomers had to have an admission slip before they would be allowed into the “fellowship.” Others simply don’t make an effort to connect with newcomers. Newcomers need someone to connect with them and accept them unconditionally.

Harry Piland, former director of the Sunday School Division of LifeWay Christian Resources, once said that the church should be “the easiest place to get into and the hardest place to get out of.” Reaching secular people should be part of the fabric of today’s church. When we make reaching secular people a mindset and a practice, other unchurched people will discover that in fact, the church really is a great place.

Job Description for the Position of DAD

Long-term team players needed for challenging permanent work in an often chaotic environment. Candidates must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and be willing to work variable hours, which will include evenings and weekends and frequent 24 hour shifts on call. Some overnight travel required, including trips to primitive camping sites on rainy weekends and endless sports tournaments in faraway cities. Travel expenses not reimbursed. Extensive courier duties also required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Must provide on-site training in basic life skills, such as nose blowing. Must have strong skills in negotiating, conflict resolution and crisis management. Ability to suture flesh wounds a plus.
Must be able to think out of the box but not lose track of the box, because you most likely will need it for a school projects.
Must reconcile petty cash disbursements and be proficient in managing budgets and resources fairly, unless you want to hear, "He got more than me!" for the rest of your life.
Must be able to drive motor vehicles safely under loud and adverse conditions while simultaneously practicing above mentioned skills in conflict resolution.
Must be able to choose your battles wisely and then stick to your guns.
Must be able to withstand criticism, such as "You don't know anything."
Must be willing to be hated at least temporarily, until someone needs money to go skating.
Must be willing to bite tongue repeatedly.
Must possess the physical stamina of a pack mule and be able to go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat, in case this time the screams from the backyard are not someone just crying wolf.
Must be willing to face stimulating technical challenges, such as small gadget repair, toy assembly, mysteriously sluggish toilets and stuck zippers.
Must screen phone calls, maintain calendars and coordinate production of multiple homework projects.
Must have ability to plan and organize social gatherings for clients of all ages and mental outlooks.
Must be willing to be indispensable one minute, an embarrassment the next.
Must have a diverse knowledge base, so as to answer questions on the fly such as "What makes the wind move?" or "Why can't we just stop all wars?"
Must assume final, complete accountability for the quality of the end product.
Other responsibilities include floor maintenance and janitorial work throughout the facility.

POSSIBILITY FOR ADVANCEMENT AND PROMOTION

Virtually none. Your job is to remain in the same position for years, without complaining, constantly retraining and updating your skills, so that those in your charge can ultimately surpass you.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

None required, unfortunately. On-the-job training offered on a continually exhausting basis.

WAGES AND COMPENSATION

You pay them, offering frequent raises and bonuses. A balloon payment is due when they turn 18 because of the assumption that college will help them become financially independent. When you die, you give them whatever is left. The oddest thing about this reverse-salary scheme is that you actually enjoy it and wish you could only do more.

10 Reasons Why Some Men Don't Go to Church

1. Men are told over and over to be innocent as doves, but are not shown or encouraged to be wise as serpents. The same word for 'wise" that Jesus used can also be translated as shrewd and cunning.. The church wants nice men. Jesus, according to his own words, wants shrewd ones.

2. We preach from the NGB: Nice Guy Bible (Retail Price: Your Soul). We emphasize the sweet stuff and let the tougher stuff go right on by. For example, it was the book of Ecclesiastes that brought President Abraham Lincoln more solace during the Civil War than any other writing. Unfortunately the meatier and more penetrating scriptures aren't emphasized much today.

3. We contend that the ideal Christian man is unemotional and if married, sacrifices everything for his wife. According to the latest study from the University of Virginia, this false expectation toward stoicism sets men up for divorce from women who want an emotionally engaged husband And men who sacrifice all their wants and needs for their spouse eventually bore their spouse.

4. Men have been told to avoid anger at all costs, which isn't what the Bible says. They have not been shown a better way: how to properly handle this primary emotion for guys since unresolved anger can lead to depression, alcohol and drug abuse, and even impotency.

5. We promote a dangerous caricature of "gentle Jesus meek and mild," an infamous and ludicrous term penned by the late John Wesley. This dangerous caricature is as fictitious as anything you'll find in Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code. We can't blame Hollywood or the mainstream media.

6. Men, compared to women, are a problem to be fixed instead of a gender to be appreciated at church. This is mighty unattractive and unbiblical. Some of these churches have also given men the unbiblical belief that women are more moral and spiritual, an intrinsically shame-filled message that is also a form of gender bigotry.

7. The church and Christian radio have failed to support a married man's need for regular sexual intimacy with his wife, which is an insult and a betrayal. We are men, not eunuchs.

8. Christian men are unintentionally encouraged to become submissive to other men in a misguided attempt to bolster their "Christian witness." We have been turned into doormats and anvils, instead of bold hammers like the fathers of our faith. Proverbs 28:1 says that the righteous are as bold as lions. Bold men are both rare and not really welcomed at church.

9. We unintentionally create spiritual veal: overprotected children who are taught to embrace false humility and false meekness. Sons and daughters are not encouraged to possess a powerful opinion of themselves because they are deemed unChristian, which sets them up for destructive peer pressure. Sunday School too often creates nice and passive kids instead of good ones.

10. Worship music is often too sentimental for guy tastes. Too often we sing of love, forgiveness, and grace (and they are important) but we shy away from “Onward, Christian soldiers” and “Fight the Good Fight”.
